 – City tour:

01

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is Vietnam at its most dizzying: a high-octane city of commerce and culture that has driven the whole country forward with its pulsating energy. A chaotic whirl, the city breathes life and vitality into all who settle here – visitors cannot help but be hauled along for the ride.

02

From the finest of hotels to the cheapest of guesthouses, the classiest of restaurants to the tastiest of street stalls, the choicest of boutiques to the scrum of the markets, HCMC is a city of contrasts. Wander through timeless alleys to incense-infused temples before catching up with the present in designer malls beneath sleek skyscrapers. The ghosts of the past live on in buildings that one generation ago witnessed a city in turmoil, but the real beauty of (erstwhile) Saigon’s urban collage is the seamless blending of these two worlds into one thrilling, seething mass, while a host of new and exhilarating tours get you way off-the-beaten track.

The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong’s base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968. The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped to counter the growing American military effort. http://www.etravelvietnam.com/english/tour_details.php?tourID=229

On top of having a wonderful initiation on Vietnamese Gastronomy, you will have the opportunity to go back in history and spend time in one of the last colonial building still erected right downtown. This building has been built in 1930 by the French, and was to be the residence of the Saigonese Elite. It was the first concrete building in Asia, and the pride of its French architect. Unfortunately he made a typical “colonial“ mistake: as many French buildings in France, the space under the roof was divided into small rooms for the servants. When the building was finished and the apartments put on sale, none of the rich Vietnamese accepted to live there, as in Asia the tradition is to have only your ancestors’ altar or worshiped gods over your head, not servants!
